On Friday 12 June, 30 Year 6 students from St Paul the Apostle Primary, Winston Hills were selected from 1,000 schools across Australia to participate in a Moran Photography Workshop. Students spent the day working with international photographer Sally Mayman.

Sally taught the students about the art of photography, focusing on the stories behind photographs and the impact and uses of this ‘visual art’. Students picked up photography basics which included the importance of considering subject, background, composition, framing and light, and were inspired by many beautiful examples of Sally’s own photographs.

Students took part in two practical sessions which involved the students planning and taking their own photos using cameras and printing docks made available by the Moran Arts Foundation. The students will use their newfound skills and knowledge to enter the primary section of the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize. Assistant principal, St Paul the Apostle, Bernadette Fabri, said the workshop was a wonderful experience for the students.

‘I can honestly say that this learning experience exceeded all my expectations. The fact that the students were hesitant to go to recess and lunch on that day is testimony to the fact that they were having such a great day,’ said Bernadette.

Members of the school’s student publishing team found the day particularly relevant given their roles as school photographers.

‘It was an excellent day that taught us that there is more to photography than meets the eye. Sally is a superb photographer and a great mentor and we hope to follow her footsteps by using the great tips about photography she taught us on the day,’ said Year 6 students and publishing team members, Ben and Shannon.
