Success for St Columba's High in Australian Geographic Competition
In Term 1, 36 students from St Columba's High, Springwood competed in the National Geographic Channel Australian Geography Competition. The students achieved outstanding results, with a quarter of the students who sat the paper receiving a High Distinction - placing St Columba's High in the top 10% of Australian participants. Year 11 student, Adrian Morris, was placed in the top 1.6% of nationwide participants in the Senior Category and achieved a High Distinction in the competition for the 5th successive year.
The competition is open to students studying Geography or an integrated Social Science which includes Geography and is designed to encourage student interest in Geography and reward student excellence.
'On the whole, St Columba's High performed really well in the recent National Geographic Competition,' said assistant HSIE coordinator, Michael Griffiths.
'Many of the students excelled, with 9 students achieving a High Distinction, 4% receiving Distinctions and 10 students receiving a credit.'
The competition involves students answering a range of geographical skills-based and general geographic knowledge multiple choice questions. Approximately 90,000 students from schools across Australia took part in the competition this year.
