On Tuesday 20 October, Higher School Certificate (HSC) examinations will commence for students across New South Wales. These final exams will mark the culmination of 13 years of schooling for over 2,400 students from Catholic schools in the Diocese of Parramatta.

According to the NSW Board of Studies, this year there are 69,261 HSC students, the largest group ever to complete Year 12.

The Daily Telegraph yesterday asked five of the top performing students in last year’s HSC what their tips were for succeeding in the final exams. Their advice included:

  • be organised and have structure with a study timetable
  • take breaks and keep in touch with friends
  • do some exercise and go for a walk or jog
  • avoid caffeine and try to get plenty of sleep
  • forget everything that has happened earlier in the year and concentrate on the exams
  • stay level headed and keep everything in perspective. There is more to life than the HSC

In a podcast to Year 12 students, executive director of schools, Greg Whitby encouraged the students to have the confidence to go forward and do their very best in the future.

‘You can go forward with a lot of confidence because you have had the benefit of a Catholic education and that means you have been looked after by teachers that care for you and have worked very hard in your interests,’ said Greg.

‘You’ve been nurtured and supported by your families as well. So don’t be afraid, get in there and give it your very best.’

The final HSC examinations will be held on Friday 13 November and results and results available to students by internet, SMS and telephone on Wednesday 16 December.
