Easter Liturgy
On the morning of Holy Thursday we gathered together to witness and reflect on the story of the crucifixion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. Several students acted out parts of the story, while others read from the Gospel the Lord’s Passion. While the liturgy was celebrated together as one community, the emphasis was on personal reflection and individual preparation in our own hearts to receive the Risen Jesus on Easter Sunday.
The boys processed from the back of the hall dressed in character carrying symbols that would become part of the liturgy. The story of Jesus washing his disciples feet challenged us to think of ways that we too can be servant to others as Jesus so humbly showed us. The story continued to the betrayal by Judas and the arrest of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. The students watched silently as Pilate gave in to the crowd and handed Jesus over to be crucified. Jesus struggled under the weight of the cross and Simon was dragged from the crowd to help him carry it. With the stage now empty we listened to the words from the Gospel describing Jesus’ final moments on the cross and paused in silence at the time he took his final breath. Three slow drum beats marked this solemn occasion.
With the song ‘I believe in the Cross’ playing, the actors returned to the stage no longer in character, carrying the crown of thorns, Jesus’ garments and the cross. These powerful symbols were placed in prominent positions on the stage with an image of a crucifix on the screen in the background. As a community, together we prayed the Our Father before finishing the liturgy.
